On Your Dry Skin
Your second major issue is cracked and dehydrated skin.
What does your skin look like?
You may have experienced some of the following:
- Dry and flaky skin
- Wrinkles develop easily on smile lines and on the corner of eyes
- Rough skin surface
- Eczema or even atopic dermatitis
A Damaged Lipid Bilayer
Similar to Sensitive Skin Types, Dry Skin Type experiences an impaired skin barrier.
Your skin barrier is made up of keratinocytes (corneocytes) held by a tightly fitted lipid bilayer.
These lipids have ‘heads’ that are easily attracted to water and ‘tails’ that repel water.
The ‘heads’ face the outer ends while the ‘tails’ face inwards. This forms a middle layer, called a lamellar (disc-like) shape, where moisture is stored.
This unique structure prevents the movement of water across the skin barrier and prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
In Dry Skin Types, they have a damaged skin barrier where their lipid bilayer is broken or sparse.
Without a tight lipid bilayer, water easily escapes to the environment.
Studies have shown that to regain skin moisture, it is important not to only treat the symptoms of dry skin, but to repair and augment the skin barrier in order to break the dry skin cycle.
The Next Steps
A proper function of this skin barrier is a vital aspect of your skin’s overall health and appearance. Genetic defects, aging, stress, medications and environmental issues such as UV light, pollution can all contribute to the damage of your skin barrier.
Often times, dry skin is caused by the lack of moisture while other times, it might be an indicator of an underlying issue, such as genetics.
Simply dehydrated skin can be easily fixed with the proper skincare routine!
On the other hand, using the wrong skincare products and ingredients for your snowperk iD can affect your Dry skin’s barrier.
A poor diet, stress and over-exfoliation especially for Dry Skin Types can further damage the skin barrier.
Understanding the proper skincare products to use on your skin is a vital step in maintaining a healthy skin barrier and achieving well-hydrated skin.
