Are you struggling with acne, scarring or MASKNE? Do you want to have a clear, acne-free skin care routine without any side effects? Want to gain confidence in your skin without make-up or expensive treatments?
How do you do that?
If you have acne-prone skin, then you know finding the right skincare product for your skin type and skin concern can be difficult. The key is to use effective, yet gentle, skincare products. That’s why I put together this skincare routine that’s perfect for acne-prone skin and sensitive skin.
I believe the routine recommendation should be backed up by Science. I will be sharing a simple and dermatologist proven skincare routine so you can see the best result in a simple and safe way.
Skincare Routine For Acne Targets 5 Hidden Causes of Acne
There are many routines talking about Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and retinol treatment. This treatment is more designed for those people who have persistent acne problems and need to use stronger products to solve the problem.
In this blog, I will focus on the routine for mild acne, so you do not need to use aggressive products to treat your skin or your sensitive skin can even tolerate it.
The first step in choosing the right skincare routine is to understand the actual causes of acne.
1. Air Pollution Degrades The Quality of The Produced Sebum
Pollution can degrade the quality of the produced sebum, generating toxins and in turn triggering inflammation.
According to a study in Frontiers in Pharmacology, factors in your environment — like air pollution, tobacco smoke and UV rays — contribute to some of the most common skin concerns, including acne, irritation and premature skin aging.
Pollutants in the air will begin to break down your skin’s natural barrier by negatively affecting the natural bacteria, lipids, and collagen in it. They can cause breakouts, rashes, and irritation as dirt particles gather on your skin, clogging your pores.
Pollution also decreases the amount of vitamin E in your skin, which protects your skin against age spots, sunburn, pimples, and skin cancer.
2. Sebum Overproduction Triggers Inflammation
Normal amounts of sebum help keep the skin supple and hydrated, preventing water loss from the skin
Scientific study shows sebum alone does not cause acne. But, when mixed with sweat, dirt and dead skin cells, it forms a favorable environment for the acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium Acne) to proliferate (excessively grow) and trigger inflammation, causing acne.
3. Imbalanced Skin Microbiome Causes Acne
Scientific study discovered increasingly more links between the skin microbiota and known skin conditions including acne skin and aging skin. The skin microbiome is an ecosystem of bacteria that helps protect your skin. The duration and intensity of your exposure to various factors such as clothing fabrics, cosmetics, and UV radiation can affect your skin’s microbiome.
An imbalanced skin microbiome results in an overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria, causing acne. An imbalanced microbiome in the gut can also affect your skin’s microbiome, contributing to skin problems such as acne, eczema, and rosacea.
Traditional approach is using the treatment to kill and reduce bacteria but this can not manage recurring acne. I will introduce new technology – microbiome skincare to maintain a clear face year round.
4. Too Many Skin Care Products Can Irritate Your Skin
Using too much anti-acne medication can burn and irritate your skin – and even cause more acne. Common acne-fighting ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and tea tree oil do work, but they can dry and damage your skin.
Benzoyl peroxide is commonly found in anti-acne products but for those with sensitive skin, it can cause a rash or irritation.
5. Poor Diet Affects Your Skin
The foods you eat affect your skin.
Certain foods high in carbohydrates, such as pasta, cookies and potatoes, can increase your blood sugar level faster than other types of food. When your blood sugar rises quickly, it causes the body to release a hormone called insulin.
Having excess insulin in your blood can cause your oil glands to produce more oil, increasing your risks of acne.

Morning Personalised Skincare Routine for Acne:
- Cleanser: Start washing your face every morning with a gentle face cleanser.
I recommend two cleansers here, Simple Refreshing Facial Gel Wash and Dermaclear Micro Foam Cleanser, because they offer gentle cleansing, which are especially great for acne prone skin and you can choose either one depending on your budget. They are PH balanced and suitable for sensitive skin.
Personally, I tried Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Micro Foam Cleanser for my face. When I read the ingredient label, I saw these two mild cleansing ingredients – Lauryl Hydroxysultaine, Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate. It confirmed my choice of a mild cleanser.
It has a gel-like texture after mixing with water and becomes foam-like. My skin feels clean and soft after washing with this cleanser.
- Toners: Toners balance your skin PH and get you ready to absorb the next step treatment
I chose these two toners – Simple Soothing Toner and Avene Thermal Spring Water. Simple Soothing Toner contains soothing ingredients like allantoin and witch hazel and Avene Thermal Spring Water is clinically proven to calm itching sensation and irritation, restores the skin barrier and strengthen skin defenses. Both are fragrance free.
I personally use Avene Thermal Spring Water daily in my skincare routine, and like this unique thermal spring water that is enriched with minerals and biological wealth optimised for sensitive skin , after using this toner, the skin feels refreshing and hydrated.
- Face Serums and Boosters:
Acne skin types have an extra layer of sebum to prevent penetration of ingredients.
Your effective skincare routine for acne will aim to help skin absorb the products well and without side effects. This means removing excess sebum in Oily Skin Types and layer with PH balanced booster and slowly introduce the concentrated boosters.
So, I recommend choosing the 2 month routine with right skincare ingredients for your skin and your skin can tolerate it. The 1st month routine is Intense Hydration Set (1st month) which contains Pore Minimizing Booster & Super Hydrating Booster.
We know Salicylic Acid can help refine pore size, but the product PH is quite acidic (below 4). So sensitive skin may not tolerate it. I recommend snowperk Pore Minimising Booster, a PH balanced booster with natural derived red clover flower extract to reduce pore size.
This Pore Minimising booster features 3% red clover flower extract that is clinically proven to reduce sebum rate by 17% and reduces the appearance of pore size for a refined and perfect skin in only 15 days. 10 Real readers from Daily Vanity tried this product for 14 days and the average verdict was a 4.4-star rating out of 5!
Another face serum incorporating the latest microbiome technology is Super Hydrating Booster. This booster features a prebiotic ingredient derived from Kernel Corn to promote enrichment of good bacteria, strengthen the skin barrier and reduce the skin inflammation.
Traditional approach for acne is to kill the bacteria. But the hottest trend now is to incorporate microbiome into skincare, which is to be gentle to your skin and manage recurring acne.
- Moisturiser: The moisturiser for acne skin should be lightweight and fast absorbing, so it does not clog your pores. Try this 24hour hydrating Balancing Moisturiser Gel-cream with skin barrier repairing property which has a well balanced pH, making it a great moisturiser for sensitive skin. It contains a purified sugar beet root extract that is soothing & hydrating, you can layer with your daily skincare routine for acne.
Night Personalised Skincare Routine for Acne
- Cleanser: Same cleanser as AM routine. Evening wash is important, for mild acne remember to purify, cleansing and clearing dirt
- Booster: Most important step for a booster is to apply the products in the right order and right time of the day. Super concentrated booster should start from 2nd month and be used at night to minimize the side effect.
I recommend Double Lift & Protection Set(O) containing a skin protection booster. Pollution can increase the oxidation of sebum, which triggers inflammation and acne skin.
Skin protection booster features a purified French Polynesia Ferment Filtrate, helps protect against toxic chemicals and limits skin damage caused by pollution.
This Double Lift & Protection Set Duo, packed with natural patented ingredients, work synergistically together to keep your skin looking healthy and clear
- Moisturiser: It is essential to apply barrier repair moisturiser at night. I recommend mixing the booster with moisturizer to allow the actives to have deeper penetration and save your time too. Because our skin has water and oil components, a typical moisturiser has both water loving and oil loving ingredients, and if you mix with water based serum/boosters, this mixture will help the actives penetrate deeper into the water path and oil layer.
- Clean Up Your Diet: Foods such as whole grains, plant based milk, and vegetables, and fruits can lower your risk of acne breakouts. Zinc, antioxidants, and vitamin A and E reduce inflammation, which can also be beneficial for your skin.
