The surprising nature of hormonal acne
Hormonal acne, also known as adult acne, is related to the fluctuations in one’s hormones. It is caused by genetic and hormonal factors that cause breakouts well past puberty and the teenage years.
Hormonal acne occurs more often in women and is typically located on the lower part of the face. Breakouts often happen along the jawline, the chin, and the area around the mouth.
Hormonal acne is almost always cystic and inflammatory in nature. It presents with painful red papules, pustules, and deep cysts; they can even create long-term scarring (especially if you attempt to pop it).
Hormonal acne is a complex problem that may stem from different internal causes and the resulting acne tends to develop at deeper layers of the skin.
From what causes do people usually get hormonal acne?
An indicator of hormonal acne: breakouts occur along the lower third of the face and they get worse before your period.
Hormonal acne may be caused by influxes of hormones from:
- Menstruation
- Menopause (as our bodies are adjusting to fluctuating decline in reproductive hormones)
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): ovaries produce more hormones which stimulate the production of oil in the skin
- Starting or weaning off oral contraceptive pills
These hormone fluctuations may aggravate acne issues by increasing:
- Skin inflammation
- Sebum production in the pores
- Clogged skin cells in hair follicles
- Production of acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes)
What are the things to be avoided so as not to make it worse?
- Stress
- Lack of sleep
- Using comedogenic products that clog pores
- Pollution
- High humidity
- Squeezing or picking at blemishes
- Poor diet (refined carbohydrates, sugar, dairy products, red meats)
The best way to heal and treat hormonal acne
There are 4 phases in a woman’s menstrual cycle and hormones fluctuate depending on the phase.
If you pay attention to the time when you break out, you’ll notice that it happens around the third week of the month – during the Luteal phase where pores get tight and the oil production in our skin increases.
